PROJECT OVERVIEW

This multidisciplinary project concerns the application of the bioremediation approaches for decontamination of industrial waste waters, thus allowing further recycling of this water. The project represents the close cooperation between the scientific and industrial teams: the different aspects of bioremediation treatment of waste waters will be thoroughly studied by the participating industrial unit. Therefore, one of the most important objective of the project is to promote the collaboration among the scientific and industrial groups, that should result s in improvement of the existing water treatment technologies. The proposed research will deal with: 1) systematic monitoring of organic pollutants in the waste waters of the industrial enterprise participating in the project, as well as in the natural water resources which are connected with the plant; 2) estimation of the environmental impact of the participating industrial unit on the ecological situation in this region; 3) Study of the relevant biodegradation processes on the molecular level. Detailed investigation of the catalytic mechanism of the transformations occurring during the relevant bioremediation processes, by using spectroscopic techniques, mainly NMR; 4) The development and application of the most appropriate bioremediation technologies targeted to improvement of decontamination of waste waters of the involved industrial enterprise.
