Gaia Meoni was born in 1991. She obtained a Master Degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics at the University of Pavia (Italy) in 2015. The same year she won a Ph.D scholarship for the International Doctorate in Structural Biology at the University of Florence. During the Ph.D. she started working on NMR-based metabolomic applications for the chemical characterization of several animal biofluids, such as urine, serum, and saliva, in order to study at molecular level and to shed light on the biochemical pathways involved in pathologies, such as Parkinson's disease and viral and bacterial infections, such as hepatitis C and B, periodontal diseases and bacterial sepsis. During the Ph.D. she also studied agro-food matrices (such as, olives and olive oil, green and roasted coffee, and cow's milk) with the aim to innovatively explore the potential of NMR for the chemical assessment of food quality and traceability. Thanks to the experience gained applying NMR metabolomics for the study and the characterization of food matrices, in 2018 she earned the Ph.D. with the vote of excellent cum laude and she obtained a postdoctoral position at C.I.R.M.M.P. In 2019, she was the winner of the “Faber 2” prize (a project of the di Fondazione CR Firenze, Confindustria Firenze and Fondazione per la Ricerca e l’Innovazione, promoted by Università degli Studi di Firenze and Città Metropolitana di Firenze), which aims to promote the scientific innovation and the enhancement of the young talents in Tuscany. Thanks to this funding she started working as a postdoc at Giotto Biotech S.r.l. During the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting growing global interest in the mechanism of infection of SARS-CoV-2, she actively participated in the COMETA project, funded by the region of Tuscany, winning a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Florence, at the department of Chemistry. This project aimed to provide the characterization of the metabolic and lipoproteomic profiles of COVID-19 patients. She is currently working as research fellow (RtdA) at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Florence.
